BLUEGILL

Improving

A total of 180 Bluegills were collected ranging from 0.8 – 8.0", with 112 > Stock size of 3.1". Average length was 3.1". This survey met the minimum required number of fish > Stock size (n = 50) to quantify population demographics as set forth in the Lake Management Plan (LMP). As the population ages, future analysis will be done to accurately quantify population demographics as set forth in the Lake Management Plan (LMP). Body condition (as indexed by relative weight) was within its respective range. A high body condition indicates sufficient forage for fish growth.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Improving

A total of 99 Largemouth Bass were collected ranging from 6.3 – 13.4", with 98 > Stock size of 7.9". Average length was 10.6". As the population ages, future analysis will be done to accurately quantify population demographics as set forth in the Lake Management Plan (LMP). Body condition was in the desired range. A high body condition indicates sufficient forage for fish growth.

Location: Lake Le-Aqua-Na is in Stephenson County 3 miles north of Lena.

Description: Lake Le-Aqua-Na is a 43 surface acre impoundment with a maximum depth of 25 feet and an average depth of 11.6 feet. The lake was built in 1955. It has a watershed of 2,300 acres and 1.4 miles of shoreline. Le-Aqua-Na first opened to fishing in 1957. It was rehabilitated and restocked in 1977 following a severe winter fish kill. A typical Midwestern manmade lake, the water is moderately clear due to good watershed practices and the use of an axial-flow destratifier that mixes the lake water to keep oxygen levels high at all depths. Lake Le-Aqua-Na is one of only a few lakes in Illinois to use this device.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: After being closed for complete renovation in 2020/21, Lake Le-Aqua-Na is now open to fishing, however stocking of the lake only started last year (2022) with Channel Catfish, Bluegill, Redear and Largemouth Bass. Although fishing is open, you won’t see quality-sized fish for a couple of years. A fall community assessment survey took place on 09/18/23 and consisted of 2 daytime DC-electrofishing runs for a total of 60 minutes of sampling effort. Overall, 6 species and 404 individual fish were collected.

Additional Lake Information: Two pole and line fishing only.
